At the rising of the sun and at its going down, We remember them.
At the blowing of the wind and in the chill of Winter, We remember them.
At the opening of buds and in the rebirth of Spring, We remember them.
At the blueness of the skies and in the warmth of Summer, We remember them.
At the rustling of leaves and the beauty of Autumn, We remember them.
At the beginning of the year and when it ends,We remember them.
As long as we live, they too will live; for they are now a part of us, as we remember them.
When we are weary and in need of strength,We remember them.
When we are lost and sick at heart, We remember them.
When we have joys we yearn to share,We remember them.
When we have decisions that are difficult to make,We remember them.
When we have achievements that are based on theirs, We remember them.
As long as we live, they too shall live, for they are a part of us, as we remember them.

Northwest Classen's band returns to the field! Last season, the band marched for the first time in years, band director Rheuben Green said. This year, Green started a jazz band and some students are learning second instruments. Students will go to concert band contests next semester. "I think because we’re more established and the student body has seen what we are trying to do, more kids are coming,” Green said. "We’re excited to be here, and we plan on being here a long time.” In the past three years, grants from the Friends of Northwest Classen High School Foundation have put the school’s band back on the marching field. Earlier this month, the organization of alumni gave teachers at the school $61,000 in grants, with the largest grant — $12,000 — going to the band. Principal Tamie Sanders said since the band started receiving grants from the organization, band membership has increased from eight students to 38. Much of the recent $12,000 grant went to purchase instruments. "Our kids don’t own their own instruments,” Sanders said. "We didn’t have the instruments. Our instruments were broken or nonexistent. It has remade the band.” Last season, the band marched for the first time in years, band director Rheuben Green said. This year, Green started a jazz band and some students are learning second instruments. Students will go to concert band contests next semester. "I think because we’re more established and the student body has seen what we are trying to do, more kids are coming,” Green said. "We’re excited to be here, and we plan on being here a long time.” The Friends of Northwest Classen High School Foundation was created three years ago, said Lynne Hardin, a member of the foundation board. Hardin said when she returned to Oklahoma City after living elsewhere, she saw the school needed help. "To see that it had been left unattended was just unacceptable,” Hardin said. "The last few years, the change has been extraordinary.” Sanders said the grants are helping teachers provide more in their classrooms for students. The school now has three art teachers because the demand for art classes has increased, she said. Giving students more options can help improve attendance, she said. "I want to offer them as much as we can,” she said. ©2008 NewsOK.com |
